Essential Oils and Your Health
What is an Essential Oil?

Essential oils are naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds that are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils are the purest form of the plant from which they are derived from. Think of essential oils as the blood of a plant. Like in the human body, your blood transports essential nutrients to the cells, this is the same for oils in a plant. Like blood, the oils are the life force of the plant.
They can be used for therapeutic use in 3 different applications: Aromatically, Topically, and Ingested Internally.
But not all essential oils are created or produced equally. Many of the brands of essential oils that you purchase in retail stores and online have been adulterated and may have synthetic ingredients, fillers, or harmful ingredients.
Those products, that are not CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade), may be harmful to your body. Reading the label can be a good way to see the properties added to a bottle of essential oil, although there are often hidden ingredients. If you see the term “For Aromatic Use Only” be forewarned that that product should not have any contact to your body, and if you don’t want it on your body, then it’s best not to breathe it in!
After much research and education on Pure Essential Oils, our clinic has determined that doTERRA upholds the highest safety standards in the industry and we are proud representatives of the company. ‘doTERRA’ is a Latin derivative and can mean ‘Gift of the Earth’.
Here is an insightful article from an independent lab to test the purity of 33 oil samples from well-known names in the essential oil industry to see what was really inside each bottle.

Aromatherapy
Probably the most common use of essential oils is for aromatic purposes. When a few drops of essential oils are placed in a diffuser with water you can effectively change the mood and energy of the room/environment you are in. For example, if you want to bring a sense of tranquility to your room at night to promote a peaceful night sleep, try adding some lavender or Serenity (doTERRA proprietary blend) to your diffuser. Lavender has been proven to effectively help reduce anxiety and stress and aid in restful sleep.
If you are suffering from respiratory issues, such as asthma, a chest cold, allergies or have tendency to snore while you sleep, add Breathe (doTERRA proprietary blend) in your diffuser (or humidifier that is designed to use essential oils) at night. This allows the healing properties of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca (Tea Tree), Lemon, Cardamom, Ravensara, and Laurel Leaf help your airways open and for you to rest peacefully.
Another great application for aromatic purposes is to use essential oils in a hot shower. If you are in need of a morning pick me up, try dropping some Elevation (doTERRA proprietary blend) on a clean sponge or on the shower tiles and let the scent uplift your spirit and evoke a sense of confidence to start your day off right! These are just a few ideas to use essential oils in their aromatic form.

Topically
Essential oils are highly effective to treat many skin issues or pain when used in the topical form. Please note that in some cases it is recommended to dilute the oils with a carrier oil, which could be coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, etc. Using essential oils in the topical and internal form are highly effective ways to absorb the plant medicine found in essential oils because they effect the body on a cellular level.
Oils can be applied on various points on the body, and when placed on the meridians, they can be highly effective to heal the body. The bottom of the feet are another effective place to apply essential oils.
Some of the most common oils used topically are lavender, tea tree (melaluca), peppermint, frankincense, and clary sage, Breathe (doTERRA proprietary blend), Serenity (doTERRA proprietary blend), and On Guard (doTERRA proprietary blend). Lavender, clary sage, and Serenity have calming qualities, whether you are suffering from anxiety, depression, insomnia, or suffering from menstrual issues. All three of these oils (and blend) can be used directly on the skin surface to promote a sense of peacefulness, relaxation, and help to calm the mind and body.

Internal Uses
doTERRA’s CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Oils) are safe for internal use. Oregano oil is know to be the most effective natural anti-biotic because it is a natural antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant.If you are suffering from a headache or migraine, the combination of Frankincense, Marjoram and Copaiba are incredibly effective to release tension and stop your headache.
Digestzen (doTERRA proprietary blend) is very beneficial for helping with bloating, constipation and diarrhea. doTERRA’s On Guard blend incorporates oils that are extremely effective to keep your body healthy and support the immune system. Taken internally on a regular basis, On Guard will help your body fight off infection and stressors that can harm your body’s vitality.
